rabid squirrell

Rakusia

First Post
okay well i recently got a friend and an old school player back into dnd 3.5 ed. he rolled a druid and didn't get an animal companion. darn char gen didnt have them. so he began play without a companion. he gave himself a cursed background involving a wood nymph an scorned sorcerer and a fetish for trees. well when he was fulfilling the requirements of his curse he was randomly attacked by a rabid squirrell. he went with it and used a several spells and then requested to get it as his companion. i dont care to give it to him but i dnt know what stats to give it. kinda wondering if theres any precedence for this? any info someone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Start with a rat.

Give it a furry tail and change it to herbivore from omnivore. Add a special attack quality to inflict rabies on a successful attack. (Disease period 1 month, DC 11, 1d6 Int, 1d6 Wis)

It's probably CR 1/4 by now. Since it is so weak compared to the typical choice, I'd be tempted to say the druid can treat it as druid level +2 in terms of special abilties gained.

However, do realize that a truly rabid animal has several problems that will reduce its effectiveness as a companion: symptoms include fever, hallucinations, excitation, agitation, hypersalivation and hydrophobia. Death is typically within a few days of the onset of these symptoms.

Read the wikipedia article. I think you'll decide that his squirrel will be a brief, sad, possibly dangerous companion.

But dont some carrier species live much longer? If I recall not all rabid animals actually show signs of rabies.

On a side note a rabid animal companion would actually be pretty cool for a blighter or something. Would you allow the companion to transmit its disease via its bite? Maybe make it something like an enhanced mindfire?

Or he could start with a Dire Rat, since that's actually on the starting druid's animal companion list...

But imagine a Fiendish or Half Fiend (have to break some rules) Dire Ninja Squirrel. OOOOOH! Remember those squirrels from the plane of Shadow? Skiurid?
