thats what I do I hit the spell casters with fort saves and the fighters with will. As an example this party also fought a beholder that same game night. The beholder is very smart so I played him as such he was hitting the spellcasters with the anti magic ray then bite them and next round he would move the ray off of them and hit them with the fort save rays this way the spell casters would have his damage minused from there concentration to cast ck. I thought it was genius. I killed one wizard (-2 hit pionts) turned the ranger to stone and the cleric saved from being dintegrated twice once by 1 piont and the other was a tie but the cleric had a bless on by then, DAMNER GOTTEM!

What you have is a character really good at this one thing, melee combat. So, you have to mix it up some or yyes he will be too tough.
