the "Barbarian from the north who became a drunken master"- when, similarly, you have to be a Monk in order to become a Drunken Master (as Flurry of Blows is a prerequisite), and Barbarian's can't be lawful to become a Monk.

But are you certain that they're talking about a class Barbarian and not a cultural barbarian?

There is a Rules of the Game article or 3 concerning the Poly question that goes into detail by type as to what you gain/lose for each of the core shape changing spells.

I was about to say the same thing. Barbarian can mean a lot of things, calling someone a barbarian doesn't imply levels in the class. In Eberron, lots of a churches "clerics" are experts and commoners, and don't have a lick of spell casting ability. A "bard" might be an expert with perform, a "warrior" could be anything. Don't try to confuse labels.

Seriously. There's a feat in there that allows a 1st-level Shifter to do Con damage with each attack, a Shifter trait that allows another 1st-level Shifter to fly (with a feat that improves their maneuverability and speed, also can be taken at 1st level).

For the same amount of time that a barbarian can rage.

People seem to not notice that bit.
