racial levels, anyone?

There is something funny in having someone beating their chest and saying I'm a REAL Elf, I've three levels of elf to prove it.
It does harken back to the basic D&D days when each race had its own 'class' but I kind of liked that too.

Regardless, I still like it. Anything that moves away from the human in elf's clothing syndrome is a good thing.

For the record, I think it's a fairly silly idea. These "racial levels" should probably be treated as Prestige Classes focused on each race. (Let 'em be taken at 1st level--it's STILL not an explicit rule that PrCs have to be 5+, 3+ or even 2+)

So you say that it's silly, then proceed to suggest exactly the same mechanic but with a different name.

Totally awesome idea. Using Monte's rating scale, it's a "10". I wish I would have thought of it and put it out myself. Very, very cool way to make characters more unique, grant them more versatility, and not lose ground to the rest of the party. This opens up the door to all kinds of "racial" mechanics that don't fit the mold of a class, feat, or skill! Flying, scent, 10' reach, size, enhanced stats, regeneration, fast healing, and so on!

This is a far superior mechanic to ECL's.

Congrats Monte on a wicked idea, that I most certainly hope becomes a part of the "core" 4th edition.
