Racial / Planar Substitution Levels

Hey all,

I paged through Races of Stone and the Planar Handbook today. The substitution levels seem like a neat idea, but they also appear to violate one of the cardinal rules of 3rd edition design - any new options should be equally available to old characters. Feats are an example of this, as are prestige classes. On the other hand, the changes are limited enough that I would probably just let the dwarf PCs retroactively make the changes if they were so inclined.

Has anyone made use of these yet?

I'm in the process of building a gnome illusionist, and wil be using the 1st & 5th level Gnome Racial Illusionist levels.

It seems like a great way to specialize even further and have a slightly diffrent character.

I dig them but haven't found a character yet who would benefit from it.

Sometimes having too many options can actually limit your use of a book. For example, I have some dwarf NPC's who might benefit from some of these substitution levels, but I made them using Unearthed Arcana and the racial levels in there.
