Raise Dead question

My bro's character died tonight, and was then raised. He was 9th level before dying, and so he then came back at 8th level after being raised.
Would I be correct in saying that he would receive XP equal to what he would receive as a 9th level character?

well - up until the moment of his death he is a 9th level char -

pg 169 DMG

If a character takes part in an encounter, even if she is incapacitated or dies in that encounter, that character gets a share of the XP. If a character dies, and is raised the awarded XP are granted to her after she comes back from the dead (and after she loses the level from death if appropriate)

He faced the encounter at CR 9 - and gets the XP according to the table as if he were 9th level.

He gets this award as an 8th level character.

I can't recall what his XP total is immediately after being brought back however...

Thank you. That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. I also can't remember what his XP should be, so I just set him at halfway to 9th level.
