Rakshasa with Deflect Arrows

1) If you are talking the 3.5 Rakshasa, it's not immune to all but the highest level spells anymore. It just has an annoyingly high SR.

2) I would think/hope the GM would know better than to slap this on a party that wasn't ready for it.

A combat-focused mage should always pack a couple of offensive Conjuration spells (which ignore SR) to deal with such opponents, or have a backup wand of acid arrow.

My thought is they shouldn't be aware of it, nor ready for it specifically. They may know a BBEG is around the corner and have a rough idea it's a multi-level caster of some sort, but not necessarily a rakshasa.

Either way, having the party march up to it's lair to end the fight will be a drain on them and then have them face it. Add in Deflect Arrows and the fact that it won't die by a single crossbow bolt (via 3.5, that I am pretty sure the players aren't aware of, but I may houserule it back to 3.0 anyway) and it may be a bit nasty for them. Having already tricked out a tower with traps and other peons to face, it could be a rough journey for them that I will have to re-estimate for the party instead of reigning in the rakshasa's intelligence, abilities, and firepower.
