[Rampant Speculation] The First New "Power Sources"

I came in here all prepared to say Psionics, Shadow, and Pact Magic would all be pretty keen, and all have a decent shot of showing up eventually, but...

Here's an idle question:

What Power Source would the Hexblade be?

For that matter, could "Negative Energy" be a Power Source, or would that be just specialized Arcane or Divine sources?

I'd say we'll see a psionic power source, and then a meta-magic power source that combines the magic of the arcane, divine and psionic sources.

In keeping with the ideas from an earlier thread, they'll call it Essence, after Rolemaster.

Yes, I'm actually serious! The level 25 spells were the giveaway.

Heck? Heckling? Hexadecimal? :p

But really, Curse should work fine for them.

I'd say fully channeling negative energy would be different enough from arcane or divine to warrant it's own power source. If they aren't changing the cosmology too much, Planar (Negative) could be an option, or just use Death.

* Psionics (Psion, Soulknife, Psychic Warrior)
* Incarnum (Totemist, Soulborn, Incarnate)
* Shadow (Shadowdancers, Shadow Mages)
* Death (Dread Necromancer, Assassin)
* Chaos/Madness (Alienist, Wild Mage)
* MagiTech (Artificers, Dragonshards)

And whatever the binder is...

I really hope they keep power sources down to a reasonable number, and find ways to fit new classes into existing power sources. I don't suppose there's anything inherently wrong with a large number of power sources. I just think that if every class has its own source, then there's not much reason to group the classes into sources in the first place.

My Own List:
  • Ki: Perhaps in something like an OA, where we'll get 4e monks and samurai and ninja.
  • Fey: I'm thinking Gnomes, alternate Warlocks, Illusionists, even Bards here.
  • Psionic: Probably another overhaul...and I wonder if we'll see a psionics without power points?

I really like the idea of Bards using a Fey power-source... might have to explore than in my current game somewhat :)
