Ran a game for my son

Just ran a "game" for my 5 year old. Yesterday he asked his mom where I was and she told him playing Dungeons & Dragons. He asked what that was and was told to ask me. So today he picked out a mini and we had several epic battles.

He almost died several times but some how managed to survive and defeat the bad guys every time :). His addition got better in the hour and a little bit we played. Subtraction needs some work but really I've gamed with adults that weren't much better. He loved using his "magination" to fight the bad guys. Lots of back flips and rolling around involved in killing the bad guys. Lots of yelling and growling on his part too.

Oh he decided on a half-orc babrbarian and he totaly dumped the int, wis and cha. Kids nothing but a power gamer.

Cute story! :)

Yeah my 4 year old son is always asking to play D&D. (As is my 6 year old Daughter). He likes to roll the dice whereas my daughter does not like the random element as much. They both play spell casters (My son loves push effects). I usually allow a lot more diplomacy options and the enemy almost always is "defeated" or surrrenders as opposed to dying (Skeletons fall to pieces). We played Kobold Hall and he made all defeated foes go stand in the green slime in the 1st room until he got back. I think I'm going to put the whole family through a heavily modified Ex-Libris this weekend.

This brings a smile to my face. I've ran a few games with my kids. Pre-school kids, an older brother and a younger sister. I doodle, or "mind map" as we adults put it, dragons and castles on a piece of paper. I tell them they should tell me what they like to do in this sandbox - "mind you, the king's crown has just been stolen by thieves!".

It's great, the sessions are short, and we get a lot of action. I aim for low fantasy but since I allow whatever the kids can think up, epic where the game is. So, I present a chasm and a broken stone bridge and my son decides to go back to the castle "to summon the dragon I keep in the dungeon and ride it over the gorge".

Combats are fierce business. Basically I hand the kids dice and if they manage to add the results together they succeed with their checks. For riddles and traps I use lettered blocks of wood that... absolutely needs to be arranged in order or the trap springs!!!
