D&D 5E Random Encounter by Terrain

Unfortunately, it doesn't really, except for an example Sylvan Encounters table on page 87. It has some advice on creating encounter tables, and Appendix B has tables of monsters by terrain, sorted by CR; but you're to use those tables to create your own random encounter tables.

It would be cool if there were a nice resource with random encounter tables for all kinds of circumstances.
Ah, you are quite correct. I glossed over that part since I don't use 'em. :)

No encounter tables is unacceptable for this level of publication.

Yeah, sure. As far as I remember 3.0 was the last edition with complete random encounter tables. Here you have creature lists by CR, terrain type, guidelines and a few examples. They couldn't find any place to put them in the book, but I'm pretty sure they will be available soon as free downloadable content.

I personally requested them more than a few times. Having my own extensive tables, I can hardly say I needed them to do that, but I believe they are more than important enough to be in the book.

Here's a way to do it--basically nest the tables so they overlap--with creatures that appear even in the safest environment in 1-4 and ones that appear only in the most dangerous and varied environment in 13-20.

You can then roll the appropriate die for the terrain type to get an encounter OR you can roll a d20
every time and only do an encounter if a monster in that terrain type comes up.

Very nice, I got some reservations but al l in all this is a brilliant work.

Thanks. I spent a few weeks doing the research, and number crunching, before putting it all together.

Feel free to take it and modify it anyway that suits your purposes - the more people that play with it and modify it and customise it - it can only get better, for everyone.

I plan on running an open world campaign with a fair bit of overground travel so I really needed this sort of thing - shame it wasn't included in the DMG.

Hello again. I got a bunch of people (like a LOT) contacting me directly regarding the link I posted to my Wandering Monster Table (posted on Scribd.com) and I was asked if possible could I post it on Google Docs instead. So, I made Google Docs account, and for those that asked for it, here is the link to the same document but this time posted via Google Docs.

Just as a side note, this information really should have been included in the DMG as everyone obviously wants it. I've had nearly 3000 hits on my Wandering Monster Table and Random Wilderness Encounter/Events table (on Scribd.com) since I posted the link to it yesterday. For such a good book as the DMG, it really is a glaring over sight and really would have been beneficial to DMs - especially new DMs.

As much as I like random tables I'm not sure they should have filled the book with them, IMO random tables are adventure and area specific, I would much rather have a random table in a setting book or Gazeteer than a generic one in the DMG.
