Ranged or melee?

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am unable to use the Search function. Whip (or its sisters, Whip dagger and Mighty Whip) are under the heading of "Ranged weapons". Also the rules state, "Although you keep it in hand, treat it as a projectile weapon with a maximum range of 15 and no range penalties."

So, this means that a attacking with a whip will invoke an Attack of Opportunity (for using a ranged weapon) AND if you have a whip in hand you cannot make AOOs (since AOOs are melee attacks) NOR do you threaten an area (since you only threaten with a melee weapon)?

I just need to clarify this.

Yes to all. Except that you only provoke an AoO with a whip if you are right next to your target. And with a whip you can be 15 feet away.
