Mainly cuz there weren't sneak attacks in 2e but backstabs instead. =o)

And 2x-4x damage was nowhere near worthless when you can wield two weapons backstab with both doing 1d8+str+other mods. Granted sneak attacks are much better and all though. =o)

unfortunatly the only thing multiplied in 2e was the base damage of the weapon. So at highest of levles you'g get 2 attacks(2 weapons) for a total of 10d8+strx2+other modsx2 and this was at its best. Not terrible with the lower HPs in the game, but this is a maximized version and it required a lot more set up.

The thing that you, as a DM, will have to decide is if creatures vulnerable to a particular attack have the sneak attack doubled.

Per the normal rules, if you attack a firegiant with a frost brand in a sneak attack, you only double the cold damage. The logic is that the "physical" component isn't doubled. This is tied in to the same concept that you don't apply any weapon's special effects (wounding, poison, paralysis, etc) if no physical damage is applied.

I am in disagreement with the specifics of the rules and written and believe that by the spirit of the rules that if a firegiant is hit by a sneak attack ray of frost that since 100% of the damage is due to cold that the sneak attack counts as "cold" damage and gets multiplied as well.

This is A House Rule. But it will be argued for and/or against by players when the situation arises. For your own good, decide in advance and have your reasons prepared. BTW, I don't care which version you like better since both have merits, this is just advice from one GM to another.

Hrm, I thought that the damage of a sneak attack was the same 'type' as the damage of the attack itself? So the ray of frost sneak attack you mentioned would all be cold damage?

Maybe I'm wrong, my copy of T&B is at a friend's house; can you quote me a reference on this one please?

And a doozy of a house rule it is. Wow, that's one broken game you got going there. Why on earth would you want to change that rule?? There is a very good reason sneak attacks aren't doubled on a critical. Logically then all sneak attacks must be doubled on a critical in your game, ack...
