Ranged weapon in Melee

Yeah, I agree the the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) ruling is nice, but how are you to know when it would be detremental to your campaign, or not?

For a really bad example, the princess could get the arrow between the eyes, or you could hit the magic mirror that is on the wall behind the "bad guy". Lots of stuff were you just need to know where the arrow went.

I guess that me saying changing the way the campaign was going was a little heavy. But I hope you get what I mean.

Yeah, I understand.

Just asking on grounds to argue a little. Sorry!

It is early in the morning, and I just like a good arguement/discussion in the morning. Don't you?

Yeah I know what you mean.

And it looks like you are posting on every thread on this page, dkilgo, you are a machine.

Not really, just waiting for my wife to wake up.

Kreynolds taught me to keep it simple and quick on these boards if that can be done.

How do you handle the possibility of hitting a friend/ally when firing a ranged weapon into melee? Do you automatically hit them if you miss by 4 as the PHB suggests? It seems there should be another roll involved to determine if they do damage, hit a shield, etc.

I say you make an attack roll. If you miss the intended target by 1-3, nothing happens.

If you miss the intended target by 4 or more, check your attack roll against the other's AC, if you'd hit him with that, you hit him (Consider that AC 40 fighter standing beside that AC 60 dragon. You roll only 17, miss the dragon - and the fighter of course, cause 17's not enough for him. You roll 41, you miss the dragon - and hit the fighter, cause 41 is enough. You roll 58 and miss the dragon, and the shot doesn't go near the fighter.)

Dunno whether that is the best rule, if there are real high AB's and AC's involved. (With that 41, you shot really well, the dragon's just to quick or thick-hided fro you. It's not that you can aim right and kill in the south when you shoot northward)
