Ranger: Scout Preview up!

So far this ranger looks decent.

I will applaud allowing martial classes to once again be good with ranged weapons without pigeon holding them into archer classes. This ranger can mix in ranged attacks with his two weapon style very seamlessly.

YET...what I love is that the incentive is to get into melee. One problem I had with the 4e core ranger is that archery is just so powerful. Not only are you doing as much damage as the melee ranger (heck often more) but you can be 20 squares away in complete safety and attack who you please.

This ranger can do the same...but for maximum benefit has to get into his opponent's face.

I like the mix and match of dual wield styles, that's pretty nice. I do question whether +2 dmg is worth missing out on a +1 to attack...though with power strike the larger die weapons get a tad more extra benefit that might help.

For those comparing this ranger to a twin strike one, one other thing to note is that this ranger must hit the same opponent with both attacks, with twin strike you could hit two.

I find this especially important because of minions. Minions are normally the bane of strikers...but the core ranger with twin strike can do pretty well. This ranger would have more difficulty.

Actually, the target line of Dual Weapon Attack is "One creature," meaning that it can be any one creature within range (Melee weapon). If the target line said something to the effect of "creature hit by the attack," then I, and everyone else, would agree with the above statement.

If you have a minion on your left and a minion on your right and you hit the first one, you can attack the second one just as easily as a Twin Striker could.

But you have to hit one to get the second - it's like a poor cleave. Of course you can get +lots to hit too - 20 dex looks pretty tasty for a scout +4 effective proficiency with a light blade. That said I agree they are in better than average against minions & in anycase it's good to have weaknesses. Bow rangers owning single argets AND minions is not good for anyone.

Assuming you are right, do you think that this was dome on purpose or is it an oversight?

I am always right, just check my postcount (lame inside joke)...

Jokes aside, I think it's an oversight. I doubt they do not want them to be able to use the two powers together.

Crud. The new Ranger is essentially sword & dagger (or short sword)...bleh. I fight case; it's not unrealistic, it's not impossible. Looks like I'll be stuck with the original, which is too bad...I really liked that it was Dex based--you could have a melee ranger with some AC.

I always had a problem with twin strike. To me it was "Here is your ranger. He is a striker because he pumps out more damage by virtue of his striker feature called Quarry" ... "Oh, and you get a second striker feature called Twin Strike"

I just thought it was too powerful an ability for a class that already had a perfectly viable striker feature, and it singularly crapped on every other at-will in the game.

What I like about this build is that the "dual strike" IS the classes striker feature.

Not bad, Not bad at all.
