Rangers and 'Shapechanger' favored enemy.

I thought that rangers could take shapechangers as a favored enemy but I couldn't find it in the books. Is this a 3.0 leftover that I have in my brain?

I was surprised to see that lyncanthropes and/or shapechangers were not listed as a possible ranger favored enemy.

Ysgarran.

p.s.
Nothing in the PHB errata either...

How do you apply the bonus against a shapechanger, say a doppleganger?

I think that merchant is a doppleganger, so I hit him in the face.

Hmmm no bonus to hit?

Sorry, my bad!

Yeah, in 3.0 shapechanger was a type, now it's a subtype. Though I'm pretty sure if I were DMing I'd allow a player to choose humanoid (shapechanger) for lycanthopes and doppleganers.

It was dropped on the change to 3.5
When we converted , my DM allowed me to take the humanoid (shapechanger) as fav enemy.
And rules that bonus applies to what the creature is, not what it has changed into.

Favored enemy is the worst ability in the game. I hate it. In fact it's my pet peeve. I favor griping about FE more than anything else in the game. In 4E it's got to go.
