[Rant] I can't wait for d20 Modern!

That argument could apply to d20 Modern rules. While most of the rules may be well-received, idea of Hero classes based on their relevant abilities may not at first.

Still, November is a looong way from now. Tick-Tock.

It could apply, but not if it's what I'm looking for. :) I doubt I'll have to tweak it much when I get it. But Spycraft's classes, I just don't like them. I'm not looking for a spy rpg, just a modern one. I don't want a character who is James Bond, I want one who could be me if I had more talent, money, and access to equipment.
Hehe.
Like I said, to each his own. I hate having to change stuff, and IMO I'm not that good at it. I know I'd have to change Spycraft, as for D20 Modern, we'll see... If Spycraft sounds like it is right up your (anyone's) alley, more power to you.

November is a long way off when you're waiting for something, true, and I'm very impatient about that sort of thing. But in this case, the tick and tock aren't bothering me. Like I said, I have a campaign to run, so I'm not looking to start a modern campaign until that one finishes, which will probably be quite a while. I also hope someone else DM's for a while after me. I don't want to be the DM for the rest of my life. *sniff*

The sad thing is that since I'm probably the only person in our group that will buy it (maybe our star wars guy will get a copy too), so I'll end up having to DM the game instead of playing it.

So after you run it for a while, all the players will love it and clamor to run a d20 Modern game. Then you play. :)

I'd like to see rules that allow characters to emulate James Bond, Rambo, and other action heroes.
...

So you want to play yourself, but as an action hero.

I wasn't especially thrilled with Spycraft, and I've spent too much money to buy it now, even if I wanted it. I'm waiting for the real deal.

As far as I'm concerned, Spycraft is the real deal. D20 modern is just a generic rip-off so wotc can get a share of a market they hadn't considered. Also look at TSR/WotC's track record with modern type games. It sucks. I may give D20 Modern a look when it comes out, but I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking.

I think I'll start a support group for people who don't like Spycraft. :)

(And it's not even that I don't like Spycraft - I just don't think it's the best choice for the sort of modern d20 games I want to run. But at this point, I'm pretty sick of hearing about it.)

Umm, as far as I'm aware, WotC haven't done any modern games yet (unless you count Star Wars, which IMO is pretty good).

I'm sure any clever gamer can blend or adapt Spycraft rules with d20 Modern rules.
and i'm equally sure a clever and thrifty gamer will buy just the one book that would work best for him, instead of spending money for two. ;)

for me, it looks like that one book will be d20 Modern.

Oh, to be The Devil's Advocate...

Now, now. IMHO, d20 Modern is the next step in the evolution of the d20 System. I mean look at the market, it's flooded with mostly fantasy products for d20. It's time that Wizards start showing how genre-compatible d20 System can be.

AEG just happens to get there first. Of course, Spycraft would not have happened if Wizards did not give them permission to use the VP/WP health system (based on Wizards' Star Wars), which is at this time, not OGC.

Let's keep the argument relevant to TSR. After all, they did developed modern games ranging from Top Secret to Gangbuster. Admittedly both great games, but not appealing to ALL owners of AD&D.

As for Alternity, one can argue that this system work really well for modern genre. Of course, one can also be mad at Wizards for dropping that game because the corporation wanted to use "one rules system" for all their RPG product, an apparent success formula with all other RPG publishers. But from what I have heard, d20 Modern will have an element familiar to Alternity (and some cases, other games) with the use of Action Dice/Point.
