[Rant] Ink devouring PDFs

I've printed Book of Eldritch Might 1 and 2, Wild Spellcraft, a good 50 character sheets and 100+ pages of various other things and I'm still on the original toners. Ran outta paper before ink. Cannon S400, got it about 6-7 months ago. I don't understand myself...think I'll try Tournaments, Fairs and Taverns and few pdf mods tomorrow and see how far it goes.

Corlor vs. b&w/grayscale

Another possibility, and one I personally use a lot, is to change the setting of the printer so that grayscale/b&w is the default. A color cartridge is $60. A high-capacity black cartridge is $30. The black cartridge will last a whole lot longer... and can be bought in bulk for another discount.

I have one of those "All-in-one" Hewlett Packard inkjet printers, so cartridge life is something I watch for, since the cartridges are rather expensive. And I never buy "refilled" cartridges, because I can't trust the ink quality or the cartridge integrity.

I've got several PDF's but I don't print them off like that. I sift through them and cut and paste the parts I want into my word processor and print them that way.

I don't see the sense in printnig off the whole thing anyway. If you do that you will have to invest in some sort of binder or page sleeves as well, unless you want loose pages all over the place. So no matter how you print it off, doing so increases the cost to you. And to what end?? Do the spells work better when you read them out of a fully printed and compiled PDF text as opposed to a few pages printed from MSword???

It occurs me that if a paper publisher wants to avoid their product being scanned in and printed, the last defense would be to include lots of ink-eating graphics.

My solution to that, and the PDF-ink problem is simple: Print at work. Or school.

One thing somebody didn't mention was the fact that a fancier PDF takes more time to load, read, and scroll through. Thus, while it may LOOK prettier if you're simply viewing on-screen, it makes it harder to navigate through the document, and increases the file size significantly.

Of our releases, the prize winning Portable Hole Full of Beer has a lot of background art, but we purposefully kept it black and white for ease of printing - unlike it's predecessor, the award nominated Thee Compleat Librum ov Gar'Udok's Necromantic Artes which is full colour and a bit heavy graphically.

Our other two releases are low-intensity, almost 100% text and tables..

What's interesting is that I've never once had a complaint on the boards or in email about the heavy graphics of Gar'Udok. (Or at least, none that was brought to my attention). Yeah, Gar'Udok is a bit of an ink-hog... but people don't seem to mind as much when it's this tasty.

Or, do what I do and abuse the laser printers at your college... :D

I just found out I have access to FREE color laser printing!! I just printed out Moon Elves and it is BEAUTIFUL! Unfortunately, I only get 400 sheets a semester, I hope duplexing cuts that in half!!! Also, my girlfriend has access to it, too!!
