(Rant) Pet peeves about people

I hate people that expect you to read the whole thread, I mean its not like I don't have more important stuff to do than read a whole thread on a messageboard, sure read the first few and the last few. Obviously skipping over ones that are particularly long or never use paragraph breaks. Oh that's one thing that really annoys me people that seem to have forgotten the keyboard has a return key, but they aren't as bad as the people that have discovered the CAPS LOCK KEY AND THEN NEVER SWITCH IT OFF AFTER SWITCHING IT ON. THEY SHOULD BAN THE CAPS LOCK KEY.

OH AND SKIP IS WRONG.

The worst example I've ever seen went pretty much as follows:

{one and a half pages of intelligent discussion on a topic which doesn't stagnate or end up as a flame war}

(yeah, I know - but it really happened!)

followed by:

"Ok, I don't play this system, I never will play this system, I think this system sucks, and I haven't read any of the thread past the first post, but this other system is really, really great and you should all play that instead, because it fails to address any of the problems of the initial poster"

What gets into someone's head that they construct a post like this?

It just really gets on my nerves when someone asks a question and you give them an answer. Then when they question your answer and you show them proof and they say that it is wrong. I don't know how many times I have seen on here where someone will quote a FAQ or an e-mail from the Sage, aka Skip Williams, and then someone else will come along and say that he is wrong or doesn't know what he is talking about.

Someone who shares my pain. Oh thank you! :D :D :D :D

A lot of people don't really want a debate about their opinions or creations.

They want to hear others say how cool they and their ideas are.

They might not know that's what they want, but that's the only thing they'll be happy with.

I agree.
This sort of thing really annoys me.

Geoff.

In any of kind debate where someone ignores counterpoints because they are unwilling or unable to address them. I mean not even so much as a "your wrong," or "that's hogwash," just totally pretending it never happened.

I can't stand people who jump into, say, a D&D rules-related topic to say that D&D/3E/3.5E/Anything other than their own pet system/etc. sucks. Gee, you've added so much to the discussion. Thanks a bunch.

Oh, Jaerdaph, there's a special corner of Hell just for people who make me look at photos of Barbra Streisand without proper advance warning. Enjoy listening to "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" while having hot coals shoved up your patoot for eternity.

**Pretending it never happened**

:D

Some of us, myself included have been playing the game longer than Cook, Tweet or Williams. I don't mean to say that I'm some guru who knows it all better than those three, but keep in mind that the only difference between them and any DM who has ever made houserules is that they get (or at least did) get paid.

I can't think of an example off the top of my head, but sometimes I do think 'the sage' is completely nuts. I thought the same about Gygax at times back in the days.

Sometimes I find that the phenomena in which someone asks a question, you answer, and they respond is a really helpful situation for both participants, and that sometimes its helpful regardless of the rightness of either side.

In fact, I seem to recall being told that this sort of thing was one of the most respected and revered forms of discussion and pedagogy in European history. This whole statement response counter-response thing that forms the basis of most types of formal debate and is occasionally implicated in philosophical dialectic.

Usefullness doesn't have any direct correlation to anyone's level of annoyance, however.
