(rant) Retiring from gaming

Don't be worried about quiting if you need to. You can always come back. Honestly, we'll let you back in :)

I've quit gaming twice before and came back better for it. I'd have to dredge my memory to count how many times I've quit AD&D for another gaming system.

Another less obvious thing to do is to game with different people. You seem to suggest that your current players are dissatisfied. Gaming with new peeps would shove a pint of new blood in your games.

You shouldn't worry too much about it. It's just a game. If you do take a break for, say, 4 months, you could call your old players and see who's still interested to play. This way you would "weed-out" those that remain just out of habit from those who still have the potential and drive to have fun with D&D.

That's what I would recommend too. Plus, new players can be refreshing. Differnet players have different takes on the game, and rookie players can be fun to teach and their new-found excitement for the game can be contagious.

I would suggest try running a completely different kind of game, once which requires less prep and less rules - rediscover the fun of Feng Shui or something wild and wacky.

A few years ago the group I gamed with got very bored with gaming and so we'd meet regularly and play DBA wargames - the rules are about 4 pages of A4, it is tabletop ancients wargames on a 2ft square board with 12 units each side. A game takes about an hour and it is fantastic fun. Heck, if you can find it some of the old boardgames like "Escape from Colditz" are great (or newer ones like "Settlers of Catan")

Just work out something social and fun. Hope you have a good Christmas.

Cheers

If you give it up, you will miss it in a matter of weeks. So suck it up, stop whining...and have some fun.

The inner strife within the Players and friends is strained, my campaigns are lacking in something that I can’t put a finger on, our other GM seems to be giving up on trying to keep the characters interested in plot and adventure hooks he had designed for them or around them because so many Players either want nothing to do with added stress or do not find it fun or seem reluctant to enter into some area where they may receive reticule.

To tell the truth it sounds more like you need to find a new group, preferably with players that are fairly new to the game so there will be no preconceived ideas of what your game will be. For the last 10 years I was in the military and with the constant moves I was always having to find a new group which I'd play with for a couple years before moving on again. I found that it kept things fresh by changing groups. New players are great since a more experienced DM/Player can mold them into whatever kind of player they want for good or ill (method actor vs. hack-n-slash). The latest group that I've joined seems to be more about hack-n-slash than immersive roleplaying and I can't wait to try to introduce them to a different style of play. Neither are the right or wrong way of playing, both are fun, but change is what makes life (and gaming) interesting.

Good luck ..

.. but just in case break out your dice and train them from time to time, in case you come back. Coming back is much more easier with a set of "hot" dice, trained for criticals!

One thing that helps is changing groups.

I've played with one group so long I hadn't realized what a rut I had fallen into. It made me realize that there are just somethings I'd been compromising on too much to avoid hurting people's feelings and other things that I should just let go of.

D&D is a game but unlike other games, it requires a lot more particiaption than say checker and that can result in getting 'too' involved. Take a step back and remember that at the end of the day, it's a game and that you're there to have fun.

Whether your reading this, I should just say to go out and have some fun.

Roleplayings about fun. Try different things. Roleplaying may not be the only thing plagueing you, though as a DM it can be a stressful occupation.

Come back when you want to do it. Life's too short to not have fun.
