Thread 'In Your Experience: How Good are GM's?'

I'm always very interested in the different experiences that gamers have. I find it very eye opening that we all have such very varied experiences and I think it shines light on why people hold the opinions that they do. I honestly think that a lot of the points of view that people hold have much more to do with how they've interacted with a given game (the people they've played with, age, etc.) than with the game itself.

So, with that in mind, what has been your experience with GM's? Mine has been, up until very lately, almost always bad. Thinking back over the past fifteen years or...

Years ago, I polled here, although I can't find the thread now, what people's overall experience as a player was. About 25% rated their DM's very negatively.

Instead, why not take what they are saying at face value and presume good faith?

So... this is why I have an issue with attributing "good faith" and "bad faith" to people on the internet.

We cannot, in internet posts in general, tell the difference between "bad faith" and "good faith, but subject to the very real and common human foibles, biases and presumptions".

Couldn't he have just said "hey, I think I made a mistake with that spell, go pick another one?" Jeez.

Some people treat "retcon" like it's a dirty word. But I see "refusing to admit you made a mistake" to be a bigger problem.

I think we're OK continuing a discussion as long as we're both clearly open to the other's point of view, which probably means eventually getting to the place where we can accept that we've already been heard. Already made our positions known.

These are opinions we have. They aren't scientific laws. We can be both right and wrong at the same time.

It does not appear to me that I can properly express my view of a particular position here without it being taken as my expressing my view of the people, and as such I don't think I can usefully continue.

I'll point out that this came up earlier, probably more than once, in this megathread. People are flawed, myself included, and we're influenced daily by our own insecurities and hubris. A lot of us are more concerned with being heard or proving a point than with what the point actually was/is. We all know it's true, too. Even when we don't think we're being biased, we are. No big deal. Humans, right? Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em (at least for very long, till that first root canal).

I mean this well. I believe you have made your point. It hasn't just been one post. We're talking dozens of them back and forth (me too). We're just going back and forth disagreeing, though. At some point, perhaps it's just that we disagree about the topics? I hope we can leave the door open for future discussions.

But sometimes "mistake" is in the eye of the beholder.... Yes, that sounded weird to me too when I typed it.
