[rantish]No DMing for you!

The following is a rant. I am just expressing my frustration. Feel free to ignore me.

So, it looks like I won't be running a campaign any time soon -- which is quie a switch since I recently was running two simultaneously.

One group has kind of fragmented due to real life issues. It was a small group to begin with, so the loss of just two players was enough to leave us in the lurch. One player is simply more interested in WoW, and another recently got divorced and is busy enjoying the freedom and responsibilities associated with such a change in life. We may eventually "get the band back together" but the longer we go without doing so, the less likely that becomes. The biggest problem here is that they were my only "any edition is a good edition" group -- we could play 1E ToEE, 2E Planescape or 3E Forgotten Realms. We even played Role-master for a while, and it was fun.

The other group basically fired me. It was a long time coming -- we've had a few campaigns go down in flames, due largely to strong playstyle differences between myself and the other-DM/player, combined with a complete apathy by everyone else. No matter how many times I tried to pump the rest of the group for desires and preferences, all I got back was crickets. So, I ran the game the way I run the game. Eventually, other-DM guy would decide he wasn't having it any more and after a little game-group-drama it would all fall apart and he'd start a game and a few months later, his game would fall apart and I'd lobby to run again and the cycle would repeat itself. After three times of this, I have finally lost both the desire and hope that I'd be running again, and since I like his GMing style as little as he likes mine, I won't be playing with them again. Which is really too bad, because they are good folk and my friends.

So, I am game-less. Since I live in CT, finding other players is tough. Anothe rproblem is the inevitability of 4E -- I am only vaguely interested, and keep going back and forth. once it hits, if I don't want to play it, I might as well hang it up unless my "any edition" group gets back together.

So I am at that point -- part of me says just hang it up. I have other hobbies, and certainly hanging around here less would improve my general productivity. But I love gaming, and specifically running games. I've never had much luck with the game-store or message-board call for players -- not enough to form a whole new group, certainly.

And I definitely don't want to become one of those "only talk about gaming, never plays" types. No offense to anyone that fits that description, but I think once you get disconected from the hobby as an activity, your views on it become more extreme and less relevent.

Aarg.

I say again -- Aarg.

Reynard, a thousand elves cry for you.

But seriously, I hear you, and I feel your pain. Sometimes you're just in a position where everything goes down in flames and there's no game on the horizon. Sometimes you can find other players through the Players seeking Players boards either here or on WotC, but if that's not your thing, how about an alternative medium?

Ever tried play-by-post gaming? There's a lot of it on here, and it could give you a nice substitute for face-to-face gaming. I did it all the time when I had no group, and even now, when I am lucky enough to have one, I still run a game or two.

Where in CT are you, out of curiosity?

South-Western (Fairfield County). The Group-That-Is-No-More used to play in Union, Mass. and now plays in Hadley, Mass (yes, I will in fact drive 2 hours to play D&D -- there is no hope for me).

There are PLENTY of games in New York City. If you're willing to drive two hours, I'm sure you'll find something there. Heck, NE New Jersey is in play, too!

You'll have plenty of choices. Try the "Gamers Seeking Gamers" board here.

And last I heard from my friends in mid-CT, there are lots of games down there. Don't despair just yet. You have options. :)

Follow this link. It sorts our Gamers Seeking Gamers forum, displaying only New England. Lots of CT posts in there -- maybe email them and see if they still have room?

Thanks PC -- I emailed one person and put up my own.

I have used something similar to fill in the gaps, so to speak: I used to have a (totally awesome) group 500 miles awy and we would only get together every 3 or 4 months (wherein we'd play for 36 hours over a 3 day weekend). We'd do stuff in betwen in a kind of narrative format. I am not sure how you'd run a PbP D&D game, though. links to good examples would be awesome.

Incidentally, I feel your pain; something similar has happened to me before as well. I think it's just a matter of finding people you like to game with.

I strongly recommend going to Conncon in March 27th-30, in Stamford. I love that con, and there will be lots of locals!

EDIT: and how convenient is this? Go to the ConnCon site, and click on "looking for a game?"

Well, you could always try play-by-post campaigns or installing a virtual tabletop program of some sort, like OpenRPG (.....I guess I should also mention ScreenMonkey, WebRPG, and the others whose names I've forgotten.......but I've never tried any of those). You can gather a group for play on OpenRPG or similar by going to their message boards or just by checking around the public servers while running OpenRPG, asking folks if they're interested in a game of *whatever*. It's free, after all.

Edit: Also, I forgot for a moment, but you could try looking around the D&D Meet-Up website. I don't remember the web address, though.
