Transmutational: On command, this ability allows the bearer of the weapon or shield to alter type from one to another.

All other characteristics of the weapon remain the same. This transmutation cannnot effect a change is size.

Strong transmutation; CL 15th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Polymorph Any Object; Price + ??,???? gp.

Examples

A Transmutational Spear could change from a shortspear to a spear to a longspear, but not from a shortspear for a small creature to a shortspear for a medium creature.

A Transmutational Sword could change from a shortsword to a longsword to a bastard sword to a greatsword, but not from a shortsword for a small creature to a shortsword for a medium creature.

A Transmutational Shield could change from a buckler shield to a light shield to a heavy shield to a tower shield, but not from a bucker for a small creature to a buckler for a medium creature.

+1 sounds fair to me, as this ability will rarely come into play except on found items. It lets the DM give a Long Sword wielding NPC a nice weapon that the party's bastard Sword wielder could later use.

more then that...

I would make it a +2 unless I read your post wrong. Could I use this to change a ranseur (reach and bonus to trip) into a longsword to fight the bandits, and then into a warhammer when the skeletons pop up, thus avoiding DR by weapon type? Every fighter in the game will want this enchantment! Not that I don't like it. On the contrary, my dwarven cleric was looking for a way to get a reach weapon and this ability would do it. :) But I think it is worth +2 to any fighter worth his salt. One weapon for all occasions.

From what I read, its one type. ie. Bladed, spear, Hammer, Bow.

You couldnt have it a Dagger one time then change it to a Whip the next.

Dagger => Sortsword => Longsowrd => Greatsword

Hand Crossbow => Light Crossbow => Heavy Crossbow

Halfspear => Shortspear => Longspear

To be more specific, it would have to have the same "name" attached to it.

In other words a sword is a sword is a sword, but it isn't a dagger!

short SWORD
long SWORD
bastard SWORD
great SWORD

short SPEAR
SPEAR
long SPEAR

short BOW
long BOW

Might would not change from short to long as that would mean its other qualities would have to change from + whatever to + something else.

I'd almost wish for the other way it could be used - it cannot change the type of weapon, but it could change size (i.e. a Small X could become a Tiny X or a Medium X). It would make a nice workaround for the new sized equipment rules, kind of surprised they didn't throw something like that into the 3.5 DMG.

Interesting, but it's really a house rule as you're looking at creating a new thing rather than finding out how an old thing is supposed to work within the rules.

I like the idea but, I dont know how your games work but we have enough argues over loot and make one item that lots of people can use seems risky for a DM but if your group doesn't have a problem I would say +2 for its usefulness i.e. sneak a dagger around then when you need to fight it turns into a great sword or same thing with shields ect.

check out these from Arms & Armor

Alterable, Minor: weapons that possess the alterable enchantements are literallyh able to change their form and type upon command. AFter undergoing this enchantment, a weapon's form becomes blurrred and indistinct, possessing a hazy or occasionally wavering quality. Alterable weapons can change from one weapon to another at command of the wielder, to a maximum of up to three distinct weapons, preselected by the crafter. For example, a weapon with the minoor alteralbe enchantment could change from a longsword to a warhammer to a spear upon command. WEapons do not necessarily need to be held to change form, but they must be inphysical contact with the wielder. All the weapon types must be in the same size category in order for the change to occur. Minor alterable weapons cannot change from melee types to ranged types and visa versa. These weapons retain all magical enchantments and enhancements in all their forms, although qualities that apply to specific weapon types do not function when the weapon is not of the required type.
+1 bonus

Alterable major is pretty much the same, except it can morph into any weapon the wielder has seen before. changing size categories or from ranged to melee (or visa versa) requires a concentration check DC 12.
+3 bonus

please forgive the spelling errors.
