Horrid. Not only is it a spit in the face of Gygax, but it just isn't that funny. I mean, it's one thing to joke around about the random monster generator, but it just isn't funny in print or play, in my opinion.

Crothian, you really should get your hands on U3 before you waste valuable oxygen breathing time acquiring Castle Greyhawk. ;) WotC used to have it for free on their website (U3, I mean--they had the entire Saltmarsh series in electronic form, plus the maps and artwork). I wonder if someone could find it with the Wayback Machine....

Hey, if you know of someone willingto trade U3 I'm all ears, but I go after what I can get....

I owned for some time. I found it humorous, and groups I have run through it found it both enjoyable and in keeping with the vide variety of tones and subgenres in my campaigns.

It's interesting, because a friend of mine had the same exact reaction. He and his group ran it when it first came out, and they found it funny.

I think WG 7 is a good litmus test to see if someone is an olde schoole Greyhawk fan. If you bought the folio or the '83 boxed set and really liked Greyhawk, WG 7 was a crushing disappointment.

It's funny how expectations can have such an enormous impact on how we view things. This is definitely one of those times where the module in my head was far better than the module that ended up on store shelves. I've had similar reactions to other D&D books, especially when I was younger, didn't have access to Dragon, and it was really hard to find good information about new releases.

The voice of dissidence....

I've heard it all said before. It isn't canon. It wasn't Gygax's vision. It's goofy. And so on, and so forth.

But like Fizban the Fabulous once said...

"Who cares, as long as you liked it, ya doorknob?" ;)

I played Castle Greyhawk years ago, and I had a ball. I liked it for its humor value, for the parodies, and for the plain old fun.

I can understand the argument that many have of it not being the Castle Greyhawk they expected. I've had a similar reaction to a novel I read recently, and the novel left a bad taste in my mouth.

Thing is, though, even though there are those who didn't enjoy Castle Greyhawk, there are those of us who did. As always, one's mileage may vary.

I, too, gave this one a "1". Not only was it a big, fat flip-off of Gygax (and Greyhawk in general), not only was is a bunch of disconnected, unfunny parody dungeon levels, but I have met more than one person whose FIRST experience with the World of Greyhawk was this module. Therefore, they considered that the ENTIRE World of Greyhawk was as stupid, silly and moronic as this module.

For that alone, it should be consigned to the deepest, darkest of hells, never to trouble anyone again.

And Crothian, I long ago got rid of my copy. Sorry.

Wg7

I tried running it twice, with very different results. In the older group, it fell rather flat. In the younger group (average age around 13), they thought it was moderately good. Mind you, a lot of the gaming jokes went over their heads, but they liked it more than the more serious stuff I tried.

So I'd put it way above the worst one I ever ran (Mord's magnificent adventure). That one was unplayable, and unbelivably boring. WG7 merely had a lot of bad jokes.

P.S.: There were multiple authors; pretty much every level was done by a different author. Also note that if you do even a roughly 3-D sketch of the maps, there's quite a bit of overlap between levels.

My group at the time loved it! This still talk about today - Indiana Gnome, Rocky and "Watch me pull a Tarrasque out of my hat!" Bullwinkle. They even saved their own asses in a giant oven by flooding it with a Decanter of Endless Lemonade. Now, I tell ya, can you really put a dollar sign on that kinda fun?

For what it is, I gave it a 6. It had it's moments, but a lot of it wasn't all that funny. Though there is a picture of Graz'zt with Igwillv holding a knife and fork, and looking for some adventurers to eat, I've always liked for some strange reason...

Cheers!
