I voted an 8. My 4ed is already in prep and I have all the available material on pre-order, which says a lot about how enthusiastic I am, but a '9' will have to be reserved for now.

Before this last weekend I was at 6. Then I ran the Escape from Sembia demo and it was REALLY fun to be the DM again. No bag-o-hitpoints for the low-level PCs to smack down, no wading through a long list of abilities that won't see use or referencing spells in the PHB. Just good self-contained interesting abilities that kept the players on their toes. I voted 8, the only reason I won't vote 9 is that I know nothing is ever 100% sure in life.

Wow. Look at all those 9s.

I'm not denying anyone's right to an informed opinion, but... all you guys who gave it the highest possible vote, you couldn't even imagine yourself ever being more excited about an RPG than you are about 4E? What you've heard is really that perfect?

On a 1-10 scale, I'd give it a 3, for much the same reasons Eric listed.

7.

It's not my fantasy heartbreaker, but pretty close. The only thing preventing the higher scores is a) not enough material known about rituals, and b) I like Arcana Evolved's ideas (unified spell system, some of the implied flavour) more. When the rituals turn out good, 4E will become an 8 to 9.

If you redo AE with 4E math and basic principles, you get my 10.

EDIT: But then, 3E is for me a 6-7 and AE a 7-8 currently.

Cheers, LT.

But then, when would you ever vote 9? (Personally, I probably never would, but doesn't this just make 8 the new 9?)

It's not a question of perfection. I just think of it as more binary.

0 is freezing, 10 is hot.

I think 4E is hot.

And though I share your and Eric's concerns over the ancillary elements I honestly have no ambivalence whatsoever about the game itself.

The only actual game I can remember ever being this excited about was Weapons of the Gods which - though it was sublime - did have the disadvantage of being an RPG about a Hong Kong Kung Fu comic book and thus being 'niche.'

4E occupies a much larger niche.

3. I've seen some interesting things; some not-so-great things; and a lot of "different but not better or worse" things. There are some things outside 4E itself (the way the GSL is shaping up, my lack of faith in WotC to produce a decent electronic character generator, the fact that I still enjoy and have tons of materials for -- and players for -- 3E) that are weighing heavily against my switching.
And you'll rue the death of your legacy.

Now my children won't look at me and say, "Daddy, who told you about 3rd edition?"

I'm a little scared that my 7 (and I thought I was one of the biggest proponents around!) was below the majority of supporters.

I suppose I would never, ever vote a 10, etc so probably my scale just didn't really go as high (or low) as other people's :)
