Ravencraft and other Adventures

So, I've got the minecraft bug - and a new PC. After a bit of fiddling and watching some of the fantastic things that have been built in creative mode, I got thinking to myself ...

Why don't I do the Ravenloft map ... and Acerek's tomb ... and White Plume Mountain ... and, and...

Well, for right now, Castle Ravenloft is keeping me busy - that castle is HUGE - it just fits under the height limit @ 3 blocks=10' (no, not including the 1000' mountain it stands on - I had to scale that to about 100'). I've managed to get the skeleton of the castle done (after having spent two weeks on it earlier when my old computer crapped out and ate the hard drive :( ) If I can find some software to get screenshots or a "walk-through" (fraps?), I'll see if I can post some pics. My goal is to do the castle, dungeons and surrounding area, including a partial rendition of Barovia (at least the Burgomaster's house, Blood of the Vine Tavern and the Church :) ).

But, while I'm boasting about my work I have to wonder - has anyone else taken on the challenge of doing a D&D module map in minecraft? Has anyone thought of using it to give players a "visual" of the dungeon they're in - or perhaps based a dungeon on something they found while playing around in a minecraft world?

Okay, now I have some pics. Warning - they're big :)

As you can see, it's still a work in progress - much of the interior has to be filled out, I'm still framing the outer curtain wall and the "mountain" the castle stands on still has to be built to hide the dungeons from view (and create a courtyard).

The floor looks like swiss cheese because I'm creating a "grid" to map out the castle with a 3X3 block representing 10' feet. So, you'll see a ring of blocks with a hole in the middle that lets me easily count the "squares" - kind of like a sheet of graph paper with really thick lines.

Wow... Just... What more can I say? I love the attention to detail, especially on the Staircase :D.

Amazing work... You get XP for this :).

...And like Strahd himself, this project gets raised from the dead.

Semi-amusing anecdote. This is now the 3rd iteration of this castle for me. I lost the first one when the SATA controller on my computer went out. Lost the second one when I tried to add a dual-boot version of Linux to my replacement computer. Each time, I had the basic skeleton of the castle finished.

Castle Ravenloft v3 - Strahd himself watches over construction:

Yes, I made that skin myself.

A treacherous night....

Still blocking in the outer walls - later on I hope to post some interior shots, then find a way to record a video of a walk-through of the castle proper...

I just want to say it looks amazing. This is really very weird, but I actually started my own model of Ravenloft about a year ago, totally unaware anyone else had the same idea. I guess that answers your question if anyone else had started converting modules to minecraft :P I used a two blocks to five feet scale for mine. It's actually kind of funny how eerily similar mine is to yours...though with the same source I guess they should look alike. I'll post some screenshots of mine here (assuming it works, I'm new), which currently is undergoing architectural renovation by my friend (who's much better than me at small details). (Also, I took a more dark approach to the interior, a bit less colorful than yours). It seems that you also had the same idea with the roof as me, using netherbrick as a substitute to the kinda cyan like one of the original. Great minds truly think alike :)

I've also been working on the terrain surrounding (particularly the road to the castle)

Finally, I want to say that Strahd skin is full of win.2012-12-31_18.26.31.jpg2012-12-31_18.28.07.jpg2012-12-31_18.30.21.jpg

Magicslime, that's pretty awesome - I especially like your take of the Great Entry (K8) and the Dining Hall (K10). Based on your take, I think I'm going to be taking some of your inspiration to do a little remodeling in mine. I also see you've started on the part I'm dreading the most - the overland & mountain area.

I noticed there were no shots of the dungeons - did you fill those out as well? Did you have any trouble lining up K83a? After three times doing this, I'm convinced it's a mistake on the map...Also, how did you do your secret door and did you attempt to model the elevator that runs through K31a?

Also, I learned to use the netherbrick for the roof after a lightning bolt strike and the durn thing caught on fire when I tried to use "wood" shingles for the roof.
