From the Adventures League:

With the upcoming publication of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, the D&D Adventurers League would like to cordially invite you to travel the Domains of Dread with Ravenloft: Mist Hunters, debuting July 9th, 2021. The campaign spans character levels 1 though 8, with a unique twist: level-tracking is not required, as characters will conform to the level necessary to play the adventure.

Ravenloft: Mist Hunters is serial storyline that will lead Adventurers League players on a journey through the mists over the course of 14 adventures, including two interactive Epic adventures. Mysteries unfold around the characters as they explore new lands and interact with their denizens; Mist Hunters places a strong emphasis on social interaction and investigation over combat.

So I guess either you have a tablet or other device with DnDBeyond running for easy level changes or you should know ahead of time what level senario is being run and bring a PC of the correct lvl.

1st level adventure? Your character is 1st level. 8th level adventure? Your character is 8th level.

Seems like the logical conclusion of “milestone leveling” to me. Everyone is always exactly the level they need to be. 😴
Well, it's one way to make Organized Play work without too much gaming of the system, which is probably a bit of a turnoff for outsiders (speaking as someone who has never engaged with OP, just friends & family).

If its only for levels 1-8, that is a small window of possible configurations. We are talking at most two ASI (three if fighter), a Prof bonus bump of +1, and a set # of fixed HP. The big difference is your gained class features and spells per level to track.

Yeah, it certainly seems easier to manage. Which is generally the appeal of XP-less systems. But that ease of management comes at the cost of killing what to me is the main draw of organized play - being able to bring a single character to any game in the league, who accumulates levels and treasure acquired across all those different games.

Then again, that appeal has never been enough to make me want to put up with the record keeping of organized play. So, maybe trying a different approach is the best move. Doesn’t really make a difference to me, since I won’t be playing AL either way.
