D&D 5E Ray Winninger Was A Man of His Word!

When he said they were working on a return to a setting a few years ago, alot of folks did not seem to believe it, but the announcement of the FR books proves he was a man of his word.

He wasn't prefect, but I believe in giving credit where it is due, and this is a Ray Winninger thread.

I hope the books remember his contribution to the FR setting.

He is credited as a Designer in the new PHB.

FR is the golden and blue-eyed girl by WotC, their favorite child, but the brand shouldn't depend too much about one setting. Don't put all the eggs within one basket.

FR has got a very rich lore, maybe too much, but I haven't to spend my money when I can read the fandom wiki, and I also bought several FR sourcebooks during the 3rd age. And there are lots of titles by 3PPs in DMGuild.

My opinion is WotC's strategy should republish the other settings: Greyhawk, Mystara, Birthright.. or at least to be unlocked in DMGuild.

I don't think they will halt production of FR books to do these other ones, those books are absolutely coming. But I think they want to do the rest of the classic settings, but are having a hard time figuring out how they want to do then, Greyhawk being in the DMG aside, because the slipcases were a disaster.

The slipcases had to be a disaster because if I am a player, not a DM then I don't want to spend my money to buy an adventure that only should be read by the DM. Would you buy any module when this was bought by other player in the same group? And they are to be used once. It was a serious marketing mistake trying to force more for a no-so-wanted title with the other books.

But I guess WotC is more interested into making more money unlocking settings in DMGuild.

I doubt seriously the return of Ghostwalk without a previous playtesting about the ghosts as monster classes.

Nentir Vale has to offers its own path, it can't be only an ersatz of Warcraft. Maybe it is too linked to 4Ed.

They could have unlocked the settings by doing things properly like did with Eberron, Wildemount, and the upcoming FR books.

I've said it before, setting books and adventures should be separate products.

The slipcase had other problems, they were pretty but shallow, partly because they cost so much to make compared to regular books, too mechanics, except for races and feats were not playtested, Planescape did not explore any of the planes outside the Outlands (like even a couple of paged per plane would be enough), Spelljammer did not explore enough wild systems and Astral Dominions, etc...

So much went wrong with these products, it really wrecked WotC rep on doing settings. But they do look good both in looking at the pictures and on a shelf. Shallow products.

Thankfully WotC finally learned it's lesson after complaints about the SCAG and the Slipcases. I really do think 256 for FRAG to 256 to 385 pages for the for each of these books is likely.
