D&D 5E Read/Write Magic

Urban Nightmare

First Post
So once upon a time in 2nd ED a character (at least in my campaign) needed to know read/write magic (usually as another language like common or elvish) to read scrolls and to copy spells from someone else's spell book.

Now in 5th ED I noticed under the wizard class it just states how long they need to study the spell (in another book) before they can copy it. I haven't spent a lot of time searching but from what I have found there is nothing stopping anyone from reading a scroll and using the magic from it.

Am I mis-remembering things or am I missing something from 5th Ed?

Thanks.

In the section of spell scrolls in the DMG, it mentions that you must have the spell on your character class list in order to cast it from a scroll.

Read/write magic is not a spell in 5e; it's just a thing all wizards can do. Because, really, how would you be a wizard in the first place if you didn't know how to read and write magic?

Note that this is a feature of the Wizard class. Not just anyone can do it.
