ready action vs silent still spell

Logic + Magic + RPGs = exploded head.

The ruling from the FAQ seems fair. If it doesn't play out as even, you can always houserule.

Again, I wasn't trying to use logic (logic tends to fail in RPGs like you say :D). It's just that on this thread I wanted to point out that there are many "oddities" that comes up with readying and counterspelling if you look at things too hard :)

Spell like abilities have no components, are identifiable (as magic), and provoke AoOs.

Still silent spells have no components, that can be seen. These then should be identifyable and provoke AoOs.

Hence, still/silent doesn't prevent AoOs or ready action.

Not formal logic, but it illustrates a point.

Hm, in my post above I overlooked the spell-like ability factor. Good point; I'll have to concede and allow the archer his shot after all, but design a new metamagic feat to allow for the concealed casting.

Agreed, but I think it could have been worse. They could have introduced a reaction roll, different than reflex, and slowed the whole game down.

As a house rule, I might consider allowing still/silent spells to avoid AoOs and/or ready actions just so SOMEONE will take those feats in general practice. The only time I have ever seen them used is by a lich in the underdark who likes to cast spells out of a muddy pool.

You may or may not want to look at hide spell in R&R. It prevents reflex saves against your spells at the cost of 3 or 4 (don't recall) spell levels. A few here don't like it, but it seems about as balanced as maximize.

Yeah, I agree. In practice I doubt there will ever be someone readying an arrow against a silent, stilled spell. People rarely ready (in my case) and I've rarely seen a silent or stilled spell - let alone a silent, stilled spell.
