Recommend a good Summoner PrC?

Hey -

I've got a player who'd like to play a wizard who is specifically focused on summoning. Now, I don't have to worry about this right off the bat, technically, since we're starting out at 1st level - but does anyone have any recommendations for Prestige Classes that specifically focus on summoning?

Hi Brasswatchman,

I'd recommend the Alienist from Complete Arcane (or Tome and Blood if you're still using 3.0) if they wanted to take the wizardly path. They are not the most high-powered type of summoner (in fact the change from 3.0 to 3.5 dramatically reduced their range and effectiveness). However, in terms of fun to play, they are great if your player wants to roleplay a bit of whackiness into the campaign. Nothing like summoning up the dregs of the multiverse to start freaking out the clientele down at the local inn.

Try Sepulchrave's Story Hour (From the start of the original thread) to read about the most fantastic Alienist - if your player wanted ideas, that is the place to immediately go. And if you're not bored of Alienist goodness, try my own Story Hour (check link in signature) about Lucifus Cray. Hopefully you will find both an entertaining read on the subject.

Augmented Summoning feat goes along way... PrC or no PrC.

I've always liked the Thaumaturgist, but that's a Cleric summoning PrC.

There is a complex way for a wizard to get into Thaumaturgist, if you don't mind jumping through a few hoops.

It's not that complex. It involves taking the Arcane Disciple feat, with the Summoner domain. You do need to choose a deity and alignment compatible with that domain. Other neat tricks to use with a dedicated summoner are the use of Unearthed Arcana's variant conjurer, who can summon faster (no more pesky one full round spells), Augment Summoning, or the use of rods of metamagic to enhance your summons (Rapid Spell, Empower Spell, Maximize Spell).

I think Unearthed Arcana (The WotC book) had a few options for a summoning focused wizard. IIRC, if you gave up the additional feats, your summon spells only took a standard action, not a full round. IF you gave up a familiar you got augment summoning.

Also if you specialize in summoning, you will get an additional conjuration spell per spell level.

There's a class in Book of Exalted Deeds whose name escapes me, but it allows you to get the Planar Ally spells as a sorcerer, which then lets you take Thaumaturgist. That'd be an interesting route to take.
