Recommend a hotel in NYC

First Post
For Christmas, I'm getting my wife tickets to the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Gardens in February. I haven't been to NYC since high school and don't know much about the city. Can someone with more knowledge recommend a few hotels? We're price-conscious but not overly so.

Priceline?

Whenever I need to stay in Manhattan and I don't need to
be near anywhere particular, I usually use Priceline.
Get a 3 or 4 star hotel which will take care of you for
not much money. It's been a while -- I think I've gotten rooms
for 80-$100 a night but that was off season. But that was
when I had a corp. account :(

Last time I was in NYC we stayed in the Ramada New Yorker Hotel. If you are going to MSG, it's right across the street. Decent rates, convienient to midtown, and decent rooms (small, but clean). I rarely stay in the city since I've got family an hour away, but that's where I'd stay again if I needed to.

Are you sure you don't mean the Hotel Pennsylvania? That's right across the street from MSG on Seventh Ave. It's a very nice hotel - I've been to a few conferences there but I've never stayed in a room though, living here and all. :)

I work right by the New Yorker though - I've never stayed there either, but it seems like a decent place, but has definitely seen its hayday. It's actually about a block and a half away from MSG on Eighth Avenue - or a two, three minute walk.

Nope, the New Yorker. You're technically right, it's across the corner on 8th Ave, right next to the old Post Office building. But you look out the window and you look right at the Garden.

It is an older hotel. I believe it was the first skyrise hotel in NYC. But the age is actually part of the charm. It's got a big lobby with a huge bank of elevators, with a sort of Art Deco decor. Like I said, the rooms are "cozy" but clean, and decent rates for the area.

I agree - the older hotels do have a lot of charm. When I first came to New York many years ago, I stayed at the Gramercy Park Hotel, where Humphrey Bogart lived for awhile. Babe Ruth too, I think.
