Recommend me a Space RPG

You might also take a look at Eclipse Phase, if for no other reason than it falls under Creative Commons License. But I think ultimately for what you want you'll have to go with GURPS or another generic system and piecemeal what you want.

Wasn't Eclipse Phase available as a free pdf some time ago? Now the pdf is $ 15 on rpgnow but i could have sworn i got it as a free legal download somewhere. [EDIT: The free download link might have been this one ]

not to hijack this thread: but what are everyone's recomendation for the opposite of what the OP is looking for? I've been curious about returning to sci-fi RPGs after my ill-fated attempts as a teenager nearly a decade ago with the alternity system. In retrospect it's apparent most of the failings were with me, the GM, but i'm curious if the last 10 years have produced some new "technology" in a generic Sci-fi setting. I think i would much prefer a grand space opera, with exploration across the cosmos, FTL travel, massive space battles, etc. bonus points if the system supports some form of giant transforming robot :-P

i'll add that realism is a low priority to expeditious gameplay and the ability to quickly generate exciting situations.

Seconded.

Apparently Mongoose release an SRD for their version of Traveller; it is in the developer's pack of the Traveller download section.

If you want to stick with d20, the D20 Future SRD is avalable along side other D20 modern rules.

SRDs strip out the fluff and give you just the rules, but I do not know how much you want to homebrew your setting.
