That said, I have Sandman, The Ultimates HC v.1 and Preacher 1-5 on the way.

Thanks to all. I'll be keeping this thread bookmarked and will toss a few bumps in there from time to time as I pick up more of the suggestions. I figure there are others who like to catch some good comics but have either been out of the loop or don't know where to start...

Since folks are posting about softcovers and hardcovers: I prefer to buy HCs despite the price. They age better and look better on a shelf. Maybe not worth it for some (I know there was actually a thread on it here a while back) but if the books recommended here come in both forms, let me know as I'd rather get the HC.

I believe all the ones I mentioned do, and that I even linked to that version where they do, but I also gave you Amazon links which should make checking very easy.

Actually, I already had Preacher in the cart and Sandman has been something I've been looking forward to for a while. And I need a Marvel fix while I wait for Ultimate X-men v.5, Ultimate Spidey v.6 and the monthlies of Ultimate FF.

V for Vendetta - Alan Moore's best work, yes it's better than Watchmen. Some great commentary about facism, and the way the state will use surveillance to make people slaves. Still relevant today.

I'll echo Batman Year One.

The Supreme Power TPB's are decent, but you need to get the first two to get to the point where they actually do something. Very, very slow series. I dropped it, but the first two collections aren't bad to read all at once.

I'd look at the Thor Visionaries collections of Walt Simonson's defining run on Thor. It's never been close to this good before or since.

I liked DK2: The Dark Knight Strikes Back so I'll add that one in too!

You really can't go wrong with the Essential Spider-man collections either, much better than the crap that has been Spidey since...oh 1993 or so. Of course if you are used to JMS's work on the character it may be info overload since things actually happen in the stories and the is no hint of the dreaded 'D'.

If you haven't read the Akira Manga Dark Horse has the entire run in 6 volumes. If you liked the anime you should love the much more indepth and different manga. Great stuff. Same for the original Ghost In The Shell. If you liked the movie read the manga!

And you can't go wrong with Sandman like others have said. But IMO the series didn't really pick up until the "seasons of mist" TPB. There is when it really gets good.

Preacher...well I found it got old real fast. But I'm that way with pretty much anything Ennis does so it may be just me.

If you like Superheroes try Invincible, they have the first 19 issues out in TPB form and it's the best superhero comics on the market today. It's only up to 23 so you aren't that far out of the loop and it comes out pretty quickly in trade.

Walking Dead - Reads better in comic form but still great in TPB, the first 3 volumes are out now. Second best comic on the market.

Ditto on Sandman.

Alan Moore's Promethea was enjoyable for me.

I also like "Queen and Country", a british spy story that goes more for realistic characterizations and less for "Jane Bond". (Female Protagonist).
