Recommendations Please: Rules-Lite Modern Game?

I should've posted this thread weeks ago! Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions - plenty for me to think about here, and some games that I've never even heard of before to check out. :)

Well, let me add one more to the list: Unknown Armies
You basically make up your skills and give percentages. If you don't want to do horror you can leave out all the various checks, no magic is no problem either. Its a very straight forward loose and open system. In fact it was so open and loose several of my players didn't like it. I did though, both for style and game play. But it works very well for a game where there is very little by way of rolling of dice and a lot of description.

And out of print too... I want to get a copy of this and I've been searching cons to no avail.

If I actually got some spare cash at some point I might actually search for it on ebay.

I have the suppliment Weep for it. Crazy assed psycho-cool adventures. Real demented stuff in there

As far as I know it isn't out of print, I just did a quick search and Amazon has it for less than cover price, rpgshop.com has it too for cover. Both have several of the supplements available as well. After "To Go" and "Break Today" no new material is coming out, but alot of stuff for both 1st and 2nd Edition is still available.

For anyone wanting more info check it out here: http://www.atlas-games.com/unknownarmies/index.php

My FLGS can't get it because the distributor is out and has indicated that they can't re-order. I don't trust Amazon not to take my money and then try to find someone who has a copy. They've done it before (with my university textbooks no less!!!) and I won't go there again.

Once something starts to get hard to find, ordering it from retailers is a bad choice. They often take your order, then spend a few weeks looking for it for sale from other distributors. Then they'll offer to keep the money as credit for you to purchase something else . Personally had it happen with music cds at 4 different sites (I was looking for something that had just went out of print) and Amazon.

Thats why I said I might eventually look for a copy on ebay... or just online in general buying from a direct seller who holds the book in their hands.

If d20 is not working I would suggest the new World of Darkness rules.

So would I :) It works best if you run a fx-low campaign, though. It can be used for a more fx-based campaign, but then I would recommend buying all the new gamelines as well (at least the new Mage: the Awakening). I have personally been running WoD since last fall.

Call of Chtulhu (BRP version) is also a great posibility, even if you ditch the setting and run your own.

You can get the tri-stat system for free and although I have only had a loose look at it, it seems quite good. You can find it here and here.

Here's another vote for Savage Worlds. I've just Started running Tour of Darkness, which is their Viet Nam campaign. There is a ton of material on the internet, too. It's simple but powerful.

If you want to stick to d20, I love Omega World and Judge Dredd. OW may be a little too post-apocalyptic for you, but I would use it for just about any genre. JD is pretty world-specific, but it really is a neat game.

There's a 1st ed copy of Unknown Armies pretty cheap on ebay:

The 2nd ed is a lot better written and organized, but I didn't see too many changes to the system, so you might want to try this one. Also, I think that the Unknown Armies starter kit on the website listed above has most of the basic rules- just no magic, etc. Anyhow, the magic in Unknown Armies is pretty setting specific, so you'd probably want your own magic rules.

Chaosium has a pretty cheap version of BRP rules without any setting or anything, you might want to look for that. I think they sell it on their website.
