Red Box Fighter

Lesarius

First Post
Hey guys,

This might've been addressed already, but I've been unable to unearth it.

I picked up the red box as a way to teach others 4essentials, but it appears as though the fighter in that kit functions differently than any other builds. Is it a mistake that the red box has you factor both STR and CON into damage rolls on the melee basic?

I have not picked up HOFL yet, but I checked it briefly at the book store and it appeared as though damage is not calculated that way elsewhere.

Ideas?

Thanks.

The Fighter in the Red Box is a Slayer, and fills the Striker role, so it doesn't mark and has an extra-damage mechanic.

In HotFL, that extra damage mechanic is changed from CON to DEX.

The Red Box has some noticeable differences from the rest of Essentials - either as simplifications, or because it went to the printers' first.

Both versions of the Slayer play very much like a 1e Fighter, though, so it should be easy for a new player to handle one, and nostalgic retro-fun for those who remember the old Red Box.

I simply changed it so that the player who started with the fighter via the Red box now uses his Con to calculate dmg as it was in the Red box instead of Dex. Is it broken? Not that I've really noticed, it means he's worse at shooting ranged weapons...but overall it works. Just replace the Dex with Con in the abilities which give damage bonuses based on Dex.

The one thing I can see that makes bonus damage from Con inferior to that from Dex is that Str and Con are paired to Fort while Str and Con yield a decent Fort and Reflex defense.
