A friend of mine was in the U of H band that played the Super Bowl when it was in Houston. Yes, that one.

the whole thing was canned. The accoustics are such, that an audience cannot hear a marching band play. So they trotted around pretending to play their instruments.

And they were there for the sound check and practice run that afternoon, where the "live" entertainment was also lip synching.
