I think anything can work, as long as it can make some sort of sense - like the group first mentioned - imagine they all started out as thrall to a mindflayer - and thus worked together for many many years as slaves, before finally busting out together, the only survivors.
I had a campaign where someone played a Gnoll - and it was interesting. I think ultimately what matters more is party cohesion and good roleplaying, not what sort of races or classes are used.
Still, for a new group, I'd not want things that far out of whack for a first campaign.
