Redone Black Dragon from GenCon

Overall though despite being an incredibly difficult fight, they pulled through and it was tense, exciting and dramatic the whole way through. This is exactly what you want out of a solo monster. The severe beating it dealt to the party even led to some interesting roleplaying and allowed me to open another entire path to the storyline up as well.
Aegeri, a great actual play report!

Another battle report:

New dragon + 2 duegar scouts, 2 kobold wyrm priests and an l6 skirmisher
(vs a level 4 party, 6 PCs and an ineffective NPC)
1775xp -NPC = level +2-3 encounter.

This was a great battle! PCs loved it.
The battle ground was very crowded, and the dragon appeared in round 2.
it was the second encounter of the night, but the first one was @ level and used only a tiny fraction of daily powers.

3 PCs went down, 2 PCs bloodied and NPC reduced to 1 hp as she fought off breath+gloom shroud. The dragon lasted 3 rounds, just long enough.

Round 1: gloom, hitting 5/6 then action pointed for a bite, cause it had too many allies in the best breath spread.
Round 2: it breathed, hitting 4 PCs and the NPC. It then Action pointed to bite the healer. One PC used an action point to win free of the gloom. The unconcious healer was fed 2 healing potions so he could survive the ongoing damage enough to take a turn. His turn was majestic word, healing word, ardent surge, and AP for second wind. The dragon was then teleport bashed on top of his chief ally. Death by falling dragon.

Round 3: ranger moved in and used a daily, bloodying the dragon and getting dropped by the bloodied breath for his trouble. This time the bard only took 1/2 damage from breath +5 vulrerability. The 2nd Breath only hit 2/4 PCs for full damage, but even 1/2 damage +5 was threatening. The Dragon tail whipped and bit, but was dead before his actual turn. I think the PCs had 1 unspent daily power.

Instictual devouring was very helpful in doing out-of-phase damage. Its realtively low defenses means that nearly eveyone hit it, so its tail strike only got used once. It went down to a Nova from the PCs, but if it had lasted any longer it might have taken some PCs with it.

100% improved from the MM dragon.

Changes: I reduced gloom to 1/enc on purpose, and misplayed the acidic blood, dealing damage only to the person who hit it in melee. If it had bled from every hit it would have killed the ranger and dropped at least 1 more PC.

Really like what they've done with this monster - vast improvement in layout, anti-stun lock options and whole party threat. Well done Wotc, very much looking forward to the monster vault.

You also made its breath weapons not enemies only. With all three of those reductions in power you gave it, that would have been quite a different fight indeed.
