Reincarnation

Just a few quick questions about how reincarnation should work.

1) Suppose a PC is playing a seventh level minotaur created as per savage species rules. If that minotaur dies and is reincarnated as a half-orc, then what class/level should they come back as? Do they come back as a first level character? I could see this pissing off my players.

2) Suppose a human character is reincarnated as a creature with a level adjustment, such as a bugbear. Then do they gain this level adjustment for free? What if someone else is playing a bugbear, but has had to put a fair amount of xp into their race as per savage species. Aren't they entitled to be a little annoyed that what they have worked hard to to obtain has been granted for free to another player?

3) Which racial abilities should be received when you are reincarnated? Some abilities such as an orcs darkvision appear to be part of the races physiology, but others such as a dwarves bonus against giants represent the effects of training and perhaps shouldn't be received. Are there any clear guidelines on this?

Thanks,

Chris

heh... good questions.

1) I would consider giving the guy some Warrior levels to represent the racial training he got as that bull guy. ;) But It could go either way... S***t happens... nobody said life was fair... anyone who says differently is selling something.

2)Again... life isn't fair.. for the other guy this time.

3)Just give them everything...

The reincarnated creature gains all abilities associated with its new form, including forms of movement and speeds, natural armor, natural attacks, extraordinary abilities, and the like, but it doesn’t automatically speak the language of the new form.

YMMV

I would let them keep their Monstrous Humanoid HD after they changed forms. Since they're 7th level now, after the Raise they should get six HD. Note that this will screw them royally, but hey. They new Reincarnation had weaker creatures on the list when they choose to come back that way.

I'm not sure what I'd do about situation 1 as we haven't used any +ECL races yet. For situation 2, I would let them keep their previous class levels and get the abilities of the new form. But I'd also require that they earn enough XP to go from their current character level to Character Level +ECL+1 before they actually gained another level. So it might be quite some time before they advanced a level while they "paid off" the cost of the upgrade to their race.

I just realized I never answered the other two questions.

I dunno. I think from a literal rules standpoint, they get the racial adjustment for free. Can't say I like that, personally. If you want to give them one, then go for it.

There are no clear guidelines for what you want. Technically, they get all EX abilities. However, if you want to remove the "training" type of racial abilities, I don't think that would be unbalanced. Just make sure you're fair, and they get to keep their old race's "training" abilities.
