Reinchanting Magic Items in 4E

Nope- AFAIK, all you can do is make items roughly analogous to those in the PHB- no uniques, no mages boosting the party's goodies to the next level by adding a bit of magic on the side.

The item upgrading rules in 3E basically amount to "pay the difference in cost". You can do much the same in 4E without much hassle.

The puzzler, though, is that certain items that were essentially identical in previous editions have different prices in 4Ed, like the "elemental" weapons. Then, Fire, Frost, and Electricity weapons were essentially interchangeable (as far as cost & construction went, at least), but they now have different prices in 4Ed.

And without any reason that I can discern.

My guess it's because the daily power they grant is sometimes stronger. I am not sure if the extra damage on critical hits is also different.

Because fire, frost and electric weapons in 4E are actually different.

Ah! Upon closer examination...

Each does +1d6 damage per plus, has an equivalent At-will power.

The difference between them is in the Daily powers, and while Frost clearly has the lesser Daily power, frankly, I'm at a loss to see how they think the Fire and Lightning ones are equivalently powerful.

Might be nice to have some guidance.

I don't really see why this wouldn't work in 4e. I'm probably going to introduce a ritual separate from the one to make an item that will allow you to upgrade the item. I just haven't decided on the level of the ritual yet...material components would be residuum equal to the difference of the market price of the item's current level and the upgrade.

At least 2 of my PCs have weapons they want to upgrade as "ancestral heirlooms" similar in many ways to the stuff in Weapons of Legacy, so I say...why not?
