Relic Hunters in Tekumel (IC)

Zephia shrugs, "Have you been zoned out for the past few days? That wouldn't surprise me with some of the benders you've been on."

OOC: Deuce did a travel montage time skip back in post #142 after we defeated the big bug things. ;)

[section] Briony scoffed. "Benders. Yeah. Could be that. Or, worse, could be lust. Or worse still . . ." Briony shivered, " . . . it could be a nasty case of cough*love*cough." She froze. No. Screw that. There's no way. Like that'd ever happen. He'd never go for it. Ugh. I'm an idiot. She growled and stalked away, somewhere there weren't any people. Her tent, maybe. Let Ange do the negotiating. She was good at it. And Briony had things to stew on.[/section]

Zephia rolled her eyes as she watched Briony stalked off. As she waited for the negotiations to finish, she mused silently...

Love? What's the point? Who has the time anyway? And why in the hells is everyone so fascinated with Jack and his crew? That's it, his entire crew needs to die. Maybe Angelina and Briony and everyone else will hate me for it...but they'll be better off. Besides, if I work it right, they'll never know it was me.

Herkor and his brother sit on some straw mats outside the largest of the huts, then motions for you to sit on others near them. He explains, "I suppose word came out from some of our recent guests about that ruined, derelict temple. I'm telling you there's nothing of importance out there. It's just an old temple with its runes smoothed away and made illegible due to the passage of time. Anything of wealth was long stripped from it by the occasional traveler and semi-intelligent beasts. Even now the area is heavily populated with the sorts of creatures with a strong taste for humans, and I'm sure they'd be even more interested to take a bite into obvious foreigners such as yourselves. If I were you, I'd report the area as lacking anything of importance and just turn back. It would make things easier for both you and our village, and if we both hold to our little secrets than we would also both benefit from deserved peace and quiet." He says the last with a broad grin and a conspiratorial wink.

Angelina smiles and laughs along but it's not as sincere as it should be. "It certainly would make things easier, I mean, who wants to do digging through old, nasty ruins anyway? And fight off odd swamp creatures... ick. Peace and quiet does sound fabulous, even if it's hard to come by." She sighs, "However, I did say I would take a look around, so I plan on doing just that. Just a little look-see, then I can say I did it. I am sure you are willing to help us out for just a small amount of time, no? I mean, imagine if we actually DO find something, perhaps we don't have to bring it ALL back to the city. You know, payment for your help, as it were." She pauses to see if the brothers get her meaning and resists rolling her eyes, she just keeps a pleasant, open smile on her face.

Herkor shrugs and says simply, "Well, when you come back we'll see what you have in hand and talk it over. Tomorrow I'll give you a map and some general directions to where you'll want to go. If you return prematurely and empty-handed, I won't judge. The jungle can be quite dangerous, after all."

The rest of the discussion turns to empty pleasantries as you are given small plates of Yafakh hiDütoyal from the locals, which is really rice with light ginger spice added to it. Normally you wouldn't find it too appetizing, but you have become quite hungry from the journey. When the food disappears, you are led to the hut you have been given to stay in. Although it is structurally in sound shape, there are spaces in the side where the wind breezes through, and it is on slightly lower land than the rest of the village.

Your guide has already set up some straw mats, wool blankets, and travel pillows for you to be able to rest and later sleep in, and she has also already moved the mules to the side of the huts where they are tethered to a nearby small and decaying tree. After she ensures that no one is listening, she speaks with the assured coolness of an Azure Legion officer. "Tonight I'll investigate the village. I'll feign weariness and get some sleep now so that I'm still functioning by the morning. If someone questions my behavior, feel free to disparage me and my 'laziness'. The more you make me seem harmless the better." After you brusk command she lays down puts and extra pillow over her eyes, and attempts to get some sleep. The sun should be down in a handful of hours, though what you might do between then and now to entertain yourselves you cannot fathom. No one in the village seems to be making an effort to approach you and make you feel welcome. In fact, quite the opposite.

Zephia takes it upon herself to scout the outskirts of the village, keeping an eye out for...well, anything, really, but particularly the villagers themselves. She didn't quite trust them.

Angelina takes a walk about the tent, making sure no one is trying to listen to them. She removes her boots with an audible aaahhhhh.

She speaks in low tones. "Something isn't right here. They are definitely hiding something about the temple and who knows what else about this village. They don't HAVE to be nice to us but wouldn't it make sense to try to be nice to someone who might come back with treasure or who you want to keep your secrets?" She looks at the faces around her. "Those were his words, not mine. It doesn't add up. We need to check this place out, especially when they aren't looking."

[section] Briony laid on her cot in the hut. When Angelina came inside, Briony threw an arm across her eyes to ward the light, and made no move to get up. She did, however, speak. Quietly, so as not to be overheard. "This place is a hellhole. When do you want to leave in the morning for the temple?" [/section]

Ang stretches out on the hard cot, turning on her side and resting on head on her arm. "The sooner the better, I think. Though it would be nice to know what's up here. I might leave that to Zep and this one," she nods towards Yukana. She scrunches her nose toward their guide, so only Briony could see, indicating her disgust. "We don't need a dagger in our back while we're looking forward and forward will be tough enough as it is. And it's not like we're going to get a good night's sleep here." She lets her head fall onto the floor, a little too hard. "Ouch. Anyway, what do you think?"
