Remaking Remakes: The Fly

Ugh, the Goldblum remake was a total borefest. I never even bothered with the sequel they made for it.

I watched Invasion (2007) last week on Thursday and I have to admit, although it could have been a little bit better, it was enjoyable.

While the Fly (80s version, of course) is undisputably a great movie, why settle for a direct remake? How about more of a spiritual successor? The Scorpion, nature's ultimate predator? The Mantis? The Locust?

Probably because every possible permutation of that has already been made by the Sci-Fi Channel.

Yeah, but this is a remake of a remake (or 3rd remake), which is relatively rare. I can only think of King Kong as the other one. (I can think of some done more than that, but those were based on famous books, like Dracula).

And by today's standards, the original would be G probably, yet I find it far, far creepier than the remake.

I see the reason for the limited remakes of movies as being more to the life of the film industry. Talkies came out in the 1920's, only making the industry 90 years old, take into account the age of movie goes, life of films, appeal of film; leaves you remaking movies every 20 to 30 years (except for Cinderella, Tarzan and a couple of others, which seem to have a remake every 5-10 years!). Sure they may call it something else but it is a remake.

You also have sequels, which, sometimes is a remake, sometime not. See, they could be doing Son/daughter of the Fly or SAW of the Fly!

:D
