Remember when Dungeon Magazine was all about adventures?

James Jacobs has a very pertinent post about the magazine format over on the Paizo boards. The thread's here, but I can't link to the post directly. It's about halfway through the conversation, near the top of page 2 for me.

Thanks for that Qualidar. Interesting read. I've heard the guys at Paizo make similar comments before as well. From the gist, I'd say they are pretty happy printing books and not magazines.

And, DannyA, yes, that's true. However, it isn't really true for magazines the size of Dungeon or Dragon. That size of magazine is largely migrating to online only. And, I imagine it has a lot to do with the comments that James Jacobs makes in Qualidar's link. I mean Asimov's is now migrating to online and a number of other genre publications have done the same, it's not a big shock to think that there just isn't enough money in a print magazine anymore.

Just as a counterpoint, F&SF magazine, founded in 1949, is available both as a physical mag and through Kindle. (I don't have any circulation numbers on hand for the various mags, and I'm getting ready to go to a doctor's appointment, so that's where I have to leave it)

They do need to go to a different electronic format then just on their website.

A version for Kindle and Nook would be a great thing I think.

It's not a binary decision- there are plenty of print magazines that are also available in electronic format.

It might very well be a binary decision depending on the costs involved.

I'm ok with Dungeon having non-adventures....As long as there are three or more quality adventures in there.

Frankly, I like the adventures as separate files, but I'd really like the rest bundled as one file in epub format.

I just want Dungeon and Dragon magazine back.
I want it in a form that looks like a magazine.
IN paper or eformat.
They will eventually have to go in a eformat of some sort.
Major newspapers and magazines already know this.
There is nothing like having a newspaper or magazine download effortlessly on a e-reader or tablet.
Don't drop the ball Wotc.

It's an excellent point that WoTC needs to embrace the digital formats that are coming out and are popular. If we buy any of the rational of making the Character Builder an online tool, the big one we were told was universal use, then yes, WoTC must embrace these new formats and even provide multiple formats for the same content to their paying customers.

and while they're at it, included full scale maps for the love of Kord. It's 2012 and you're telling me you still don't have full scale battle maps?

Well with talk that you will be able to play any edition character. I think they need to reprint the older editions in digital format. What better way to support the new DnD.

That's not what they're saying. They're saying that you can play that style of character, not an actual 1e character.
