Removing 5 Spells

If the mythical 4e removes all the spells that DM gripe about, I think the only spell in the PH would be Read Magic. ;)

Yup. The three most frequent complaints are:
  • Save-or-die spells (broadly expanded to include any save-or-be-crippled spells).
  • No save spells.
  • Spell that boringly deal damage rather than have more flavorful effects.

And with these as filters, I think you can cover 100% of the d20 spells.

The only magic I would straight out eliminate is teleportation. I would make raise dead much more difficult (rituals, xp cost, chance at undead creation) and alter the shape changing spells (inc alter self) at bit (a chance of something sticking).

Two spells that I have read and want to incorporate are stonesmelt and woodsmelt (change them to metal to be worked at a forge) and would use them in place of wood shape and stone shape.

If you removed 5 spells from the all caster's spell lists to provide a interesting change in magical dynamics in a campaign. What would they be and why?

1. Lvl 9 spells
2. Lvl 8 spells
3. Lvl 7 spells
4. Lvl 6 spells
5. Lvl 5 spells

why? b/c, i'm not a proponent of high lvl magic.
