[Edit] - The post started changing topic so I renamed it. Below is the original question:

What are the PCGen guys planning to do about incorporating familiars?

Example:

My sorcerer has a cat familiar. What about my +2 to Move Silently and the free Alertness Skill?

Maybe I ust missed it?

One solution would be to add an "Other" skill. You could then rename it "Spot w/ Familiar" and adjust it to your Spot skill +2.

Not sure about the Move Silently problem though. I guess that would have to be added when you purchased a familiar. *shrugs*

Last time I checked, familiars were equipment - you equipped your familiar the same way you would a sword or a backpack. I am unsure what module it was located in - I believe the players handbook?

As the previous poster mentioned, atm, it is handled like equipment - which is NOT the best solution to the problem, but it did allow for adding the abilities familiars granted to the master.

Familiars can also be created as monters (selecting a familiar type (cat, bat, etc) and adding 'class levels of familiars) basically creating another character...

Well this will soon be a thing of the past! The very NEXT release of PCGen will handle this correctly! (sans a few bugs that will no doubt show up for the debut :p)

There will be a new tab present called 'Resources' that will handle Familiars, Mounts, Animal Companions, and Cohorts - When you select one of these, you will still have to make the familiar/etc as a character, but now it will be tied to the 'Master' and as the Master rises in levels adjustments will be made to the familiar/etc...

This tab will also be handling Artifacts (Intelligent/Cursed items, & Artifacts) as well as Constructs (Buildings, Constructs, Vehicles)... that bit will be a bit longer in implementation, but it *IS* coming!

Mynex> Good I am glad it's coming. I know it was tossed around on the list allot, any ETA to be in the ALPHA builds any time soon?

It's already in the Alpha Builds... The code monkey that's working on this is cleaning up the last couple of issues (3 of them) and making it a bit 'prettier' code wise... so it will definately be in the next release (That's Thursday this week).

I just want to say that you guys are awesome! I just recently started using PCGen and now I don't know how I could live without it.

Magnificant!

What are the plans for the future? Random character generation maybe? I've been using Jamis for that, but it doesn't include equipment which is pretty important.

Of course, an adventure building module would be cool. Id' like to see that as well.

the path of pcgen is always going to be devoted to build PC's, NPC's, monsters, etc. We are also incorporating the building of constructs, vehicles (with modern d20 rules), buildings (keeps castles, etc.

We are working on making a stable release for once so we can have one release where everyone can use with all the features neccessary to build a pc and with the latest sources. This will free up more time to devote to building lst files to flesh pcgen out some more. There are several publishers out there who have given us the go ahead to incorporate their material but sadly the time has been sucked dry for this release (JTyranny I am working on it I promise :) ) as it is very important in the long run.

The future of pcgen is bright and it's only going to better from here.

Any plans of incorporating random generation into PCGen? PCGen with the ability to randomly create an NPC based off of a few inputs would just be heavenly (not that the program doesn't rule the world already, I am just thinking even more :) ).

All I really need is James Bucks generators to generate equipment, but if that was somehow incorporated into PCGen, man, the possibilites *drool*.

at this time there is plans for it but other matters such as the STABLE build are more pressing. PCGen does plan for random pc generation but not at this time. IN the near future yes, but now no.

If you want a generator that does that check out RolePlaying Master by Luke it incorporates Jamis Bucks' generator and pipes it back into a nice neat interface where you can do things very similar to pcgen in it. It's only for Win32 though so if your not on a MS platform your out of luck.

As BD noted, there are plans... they proceed slowly ahead while we address other more pressing issues of code within PCGen.

We're slowly getting the pieces in place to be able to cleanly down-level a character, as well as randomly generating things... it's just a matter of time really, as in what code monkey have the time and how many Code Monkey Snacks (TM pending) we can bribe them with. ;)

A Module Building tool? hrmm.. I don't think that's a specific aim of anyone atm in the group, but there are plans to have some Campaign Management support soon... Things like entering in a callendar, # of Moons, making notes on locations/Important events, etc.. and being able to tie in characters and whatnot as you go along... This will also include the ability to specify exactly what list files you want to include with it (Say like Sovereign Stones' Races but NOT the PhB races and like stuff)...

That part will be a bit, as I have one really proficient Code Monkey to work on it, but he's time constrained by Real Life...

So there are plans in the works! Sit tight, we'll get there!
