The d20 Wheel of Time book has Reputation scores for each class. It's kind of neat, actually.

I think Unearthed Arcana also has something along those lines in it.

local news anchorman famous? "oh, there's *that guy*" recognizable?

Probably something a few ticks above that, since its a regional thing he's doing with his temple locals would know him and come to rely on his guidance and services.

That's the best analogy ever btw.
