I've read the DMG through twice, and I also use those little post-it tabs. No way will I ever remember all the rules. Some of them don't come up that often, you know?

Generally, if I think some situation is likely to come up in a session, I try to review that section of the rules (in the PHB or the DMG) ahead of time, and make notes for myself. For example, if I have an important NPC who has some special ability, all the detail I need to run him goes into that NPC's character page, along with rumors the NPC can spread, plot hooks relating to him, what he has in his pockets, who else he might know, and any other pertinent stuff.

But players can surprise you. No matter how much you prepare, sometimes they invalidate everything with one action. In which case, you might not remember the rule you need. So now we're back to those nifty post-it tabs.:)

I assume you mean the DMG... :D

Nothing like a good laugh before the sun has come up and I've had a cup of coffee. That's a good one, BN.

I am resisting all the off color remarks I would love to make. For this fleeting moment I wish this were Nutkinland.........

Read the 1st edition DMG one you digest the 3e/3.5 system. Its a very good read and great for ideas and second opinions on playstyle.

The "who spots whom first" rules at the start always struck me as a bit overcooked. I mean, I can see how they're thorough, but...

Not to hijack, but........... did you see this recent thread rounser? Initiative

It's shortish, but thought you might like to weigh in.

The DMG contains mostly guidelines on how to run a game, how to devolp a world, and how to draw up cultures, cities, and nations. There's actually little in the way of rules you need to know that aren't in the PHB.
