Residuum Lines

Over on the WoTC boards, the subject of residuum being used as a drug came up. I thought that was a pretty interesting idea. Certain wealthy wizards injesting Residuum in some way to geta high...

What do you all think?

I'd like to see the concept explored. I think possibly making an addiction like the rules for disease. I'd also like to see things like maybe a ritual that lets you injest the residuum (maybe ina tea) to get some sort of effect... like being able to see into or travel into teh feywild... (like peyote was thought to do..)

Yeah I read that "dune" thread and thought it was pretty interesting too. I think another cool take would be to use it as a sort of steriod. Perhaps this is just Dark Knight coming out... but I could envision a "Bane" type character. An enemy who is naturally very weak, however when under the influence of this ressidum steriod, temporarily becomes an epic-level character.

The one problem I see with making ressidum as a simple drug is that its really too expensive for that purpose in D&D terms. If one pound of it is worth 500,000g....I mean, you could equip a D&D army of over 10,000 people with that kinda cash.

It would have to have a really long high or have lots of positive side-effects like Dune's melange, to compete against even something as simple as opium. I mean we're talking about the essences of the planes here, versus a plant thats growable...

But its all very doable, you just have adjust the market value of residium to make it appropiate for your setting.

No one says you need to use a lot of it. I mean a level one Magic Item costs 360 GP worth of Residuum... that's less then 1/1000 of a pound. Who says you even need that much to get a high?

It wouldn't even have to be long lasting... As again I said wealthy wizards... And maybe to people who work with magic, magic IS the ultimate high.

Perhaps you cut the residuum with something else, like pixie dust. Pure residuum, aside from being ludicrously expensive, is also too potent for most creatures' brains to handle. Snorting a line of pure residuum is likely to make your head explode while rainbows shoot out of your neck. Literally.

I suggest busting out the rules for Chaos Mutations from the Warhammer books, and take the ideas they have for "Warpstone snuff" and running wild with it. :D

Next wizard they face has an eye growing in his chest, four tentacles from his crotch, and cackles like a dime-store halloween tape, and spits lightning bolts from his hands...

It could be like a non-jedi injecting himself with a syringe full of midichlorians. It could give you a sudden burst of magical energy that you can use as a one time ability.

Two things: people looking for a high will do idiotically fatal things to get the high. Just look at people who sniff stuff and asphyxiate. So yeah, snorting pure residuum could happen.

And yeah, if residuum is expensive and comes in very small amounts, it might be mixed with something inert to pad up the matter (like latinum in DS9), or used as an ingredient in some weird magical drug cocktail.

Isn't that what spice is for?
