Resting: Important part of the game?

Frostmarrow

There have been numerous attempts at different rules to recharge powers or to shorten the time it takes to rest. But why bother? Is resting even an important part of the game? We don't necessarily simulate eating and drinking in as much detail.

What would happen if we got rid of resting altogether and instead assumed the characters rest off play?

I think the importance of resting depends on the type of game everyone wants in any edition.

If the players want an episodic delve of the week type game then resting is assumed between sessions.

If the players want more of an ongoing campaign where each session picks up right where the last one left off ( with exceptions) then the passage of time is more important relating to both resource management and time sensitive adventure goals.

It's resource management, first. A game where you don't rest to regain your powers puts no limit on the amount of encounters you can chain, and means that non-boss-level encounters are entirely pointless.

It's also a nod toward verisimilitude. A game where time doesn't pass is hard to see as a living, breathing world.
