restoration within 24 hours?

jaded

First Post
hopefully a quick and simple one...

will a Restoration cast within 24 hours of recieving multiple level drains (6 to be exact  ), before the fort saves, dispel all of the negative levels or just one?

the text of the spell is slightly ambiguous since it reads "...dispels negative energy levels and restores one experience level to a creature who has had a level drained..."

i have the feeling a Greater Restoration is in order but i hope not :(

All negative levels. If you cast it after the negative levels have been turned into actual level loss, then it only restores one such lost level.

I go the other way. I have ruled for my game that Restoration removes only one negative level per casting. Having them all removed at once makes negative levels too non-threatening. You should have seen the last time the party got into a major battle with spectres. They had to scare up thirty-some odd Restorations within a 24-hour period. :)

As far as I am concerned, the part of the spell that says "dispels negative levels" means that it can affect them, not that they all go away. That's what Greater Restoration is for.

Tiberious is correct

Restoration: As lesser restoration, except the spell also dispels negative energy levels and restores one experience level to a creature who has had a level drained

Greater restoration: As lesser restoration, except the spell dispels all negative energy levels afflicting the healed creature, restoring the creature to the highest level it had previously achieved.

Lesser Restoration:

Lesser restoration dispels any magical effects reducing one of the subject’s ability scores (such as ray of enfeeblement) or cures 1d4 points of temporary ability damage to one of the subject’s ability scores (such as from a shadow’s touch or poison). It does not restore permanent ability drain (such from a wraith’s touch).

Restoration:

As lesser restoration, except the spell also dispels negative energy levels and restores one experience level to a creature who has had a level drained. The drained level is restored only if the time since the creature lost the level is equal to or less than 1 day per caster level. ...

Greater Restoration:

As lesser restoration, except the spell dispels all negative energy levels afflicting the healed creature, restoring the creature to the highest level it had previously achieved. This reverses level drains by a force or creature. The drained levels are restored only if the time since the creature lost the level is no more than 1 week per caster level.

Without checking my PHB, I think the SRD is not quite accurate here, for Greater Restoration restores ALL LOST LEVELS, as opposed to the one for Restoration.

"...restoring the creature to the highest level it had previously achieved..." is a meaningless phrase is terms of negative levels, for negative levles do not affect what level you are. Additionally, "...if the time since the creature lost the level is no more than 1 week per caster level..." also makes no sense in terms of negative levels - they are either lost (that is, do not affect you) or coverted into a level reduction within 24 hours.

Restoration dispels all negative levels ans restores one lost level, Greater Restporation dispels all negative levels plus restores all lost levels.

Of course, the PHB language should make ths clearer, I hope. Anybody got a PHB handy to check the language?
